1 I. INTRODUCTION 1. This is the first annual environmental and social performance report of the Beijing Enterprises Water Group Limited and BEWG Environmental Group Company Limited (hereafter referred to as BEW) Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Project, prepared by AECOM on behalf of BEWG, to cover the period of January to December 2014. 2. The loan was signed in November 2013, comprising an A-loan of up to $120 million equivalent in dollars and yuan, and a complementary loan of up to $120 million equivalent in dollars and yuan. The B-loan is part of ADB'

s financing package to the project and up-scaled to $408 million in October 2014. 3. Under the project, BEW will upgrade and operate wastewater treatment plants across the country to meet grade 1A standard, the most stringent wastewater treatment standard in the PRC. The treated wastewater can then be reused for both industry and urban environment needs, including machine cooling, boiler operation, and cleaning at construction sites. The project involves the acquisition, upgrade and/or expansion, and operation of wastewater treatment plants with technology options for meeting reuse water quality. 4. In line with ADB'
