And in any normal years, the beaches of Acapulco, Mexico, will be crowded with American tourists, American college students, but not this year. The fear of drug violence in Acapulco is keeping tourists away. CNN Rafael Rommel reports. After a series of cruel some murders last year, American and British authorities issued warnings to travelers about Acapulco.
18 bodies were found here in Acapulco last November in a shallow grave, in what appears to be a massacre by a drug cartel. Everywhere you go in Acapulco, especially in tourist areas, you see signs like this one that say: HABLA BIEN DE ACA, speak well for Ace, short for Acapulco, a new campaign spearheaded by the tourism industry. But it's hard to do that when the violence is begin so widely.
15 headless bodies were found outside a mull in January. There were more than
1000 violent deaths in Acapulco in 2010, marking a steady increase over the last three years. With more than
300 deaths so far this year, Acapulco is on pace to break last year's record. Well it is not a violence against tourism, any tourists can come here, they will never see violence. Any person that come here, they will never see any problems against... ah...an attack against anybody personally. Brian Rean, owns a ladium, one of the hottest night clubs in town, you used to see hundredth of spring breakers every year in previous years. Now, it's only a handful. Yeah, it's totally safe. But these four young Americans from the middle west, say that people are missing out. My mom actually came to Mexico a couple of weeks ago. As we were here, everyone kept telling how safe it was, so it was no problem coming here. And once we got here, everyone's also safe. Acapulco officials say last year they still received about
9 million tourists, a number they expected only increased by
300 thousand in 2011. Acapulco is standing on its feet. Acapulco is great and with no problems.
