Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Scholar Lecture 2005/06 AJourneyofDiscovery Professor Charles K. Kao is Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Scholar 2005/06. Professor Kao is world-renowned Father of Optical Fibers and was the vice-chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong from
1987 to 1996. His lecture, entitled A Journey of Discovery , was held on
2 March,
2006 at Shaw College Lecture Theatre. As childhood events can shape a person for life, Prof. Kao debated with himself as to whether it was schooling that has created an interest in learning or whether it was natural inborn curiosity. He told us what led him to become an electrical engineer and his experiences in the industrial world. He also related the events that led to the research into optical fibers. The development of information, communication and technology created a vast pool of opportunities for launching a new world of advances. Our every day life is vastly broadened. The publication of this newsletter is sponsored by Mr. Daniel S. C. Koo

5 OdysseytotheMiddleEastC Exploration of the Islamic World It all began with an email. Professor Hazlett sent us an invitation to participate in a scientific conference for medical students. My eyes sparkled when I saw the venue is in Oman, Middle East. The Middle East has always been a place of mystery to the outside world. Ramadan, Hajj, gender inequality with women under total cover except the eyes, terrorism, flashed across my mind in split seconds. I really wanted to go there despite a little worry of my safety. I was lucky to have the accompany of my friend, Kitty. After fifteen hours of flight (from Hong Kong to Bangkok, Bangkok to Dubai, Dubai to Muscat), we finally arrived at Seeb International Airport of Muscat, capital of Oman. From Hong Kong? a man shouted. We looked back and found a sturdy man in white robes, hair wrapped in white ........
