Chopsticks can be made of different materials. Bamboo and wooden chopsticks are the most popular ones used in Chinese homes. However, in restaurants they are mainly made of plastic or are disposable. Usually people do not put chopsticks upright into a bowl because it is a custom used only in offerings to the dead.
