4 (TIMP4) is a member of the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases gene family. It functions to inhibit the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) which degrade components of the extracellular matrix. TIMP4 binds irreversibly to zinc-dependent MMPs, and inactivates them by binding to their catalytic zinc cofactor. Other functions of TIMP4 include platelet recruitment and aggregation, and nervous system development. In humans, the gene encoding TIMP4 is located on chromosome 3.
