43 hours of engine opera- tion on the city driving schedule,

55 galIons of a water phase were condensed from the ex- haust. This water phase was extracted with distilled benzene to yield approximately 60. gm.of tar. The extraction was carried out in an 1I-stageYork-Scheibelextraction column at a benzene-waterratio of

1 to 10. (Using the analytic method given in this paper, no polynuclear hydrocarbons could be isolated from the extracted water phase.) The benzene rinses of the accumulator and transfer barrels resulted after vacuum evaporation in 31. gm. of material (yellow-brownlight oil). The glass filters were extracted with a bennene-methanol

20 gm. of oily tar was rcccntly found to be much richer in benzo[o]pyrene than was the sample reported in this paper. It may be presumed that this unreported frac- tion contains other polynuclear aromatic hy- drocaibons in similarly relatively higher con- centrations. Recognizing this short-coming of the Ixcsent analysis, it is anticipated that a repeat analysis will be made in the near future on a more nearly representative sampling of the whole tar. From the combined portions (165 gm.), a sample of 5.023 gm.was used for the analysis. Both phases were sepa- rated and ihe methanol-water phase extracted
